In a series of 16 Parkinsonian patients receiving L‐dopa over a period of 12 months, statistical analysis showed that most patients, although their condition improved from their pretreatment status, failed to maintain their early level of response. This finding was clinically unexpected and contrasts with the experience of others. Possible sources of error are discounted. Some potentially deceptive or unusual side effects encountered in a larger group of patients are mentioned; these include weight loss, flushing, dyspnoea, dysphagia, restlessness, logorrhœa, akinetic mutism and oropharyngeal dystonias.
