This study was conducted as a pilot project preceding the investigation of aspects of oral health of the general enrolment of students at the University of Adelaide. The findings, although subject to some degree of bias because they relate solely to dental students, are of value for comparative purposes. For example, 85% of the families of dental students have regular dental care. In the opinion of informed investigators, this is more than twice the percentage found in families of the population at large. While the number of students studying dentistry at the University of Adelaide has increased, fewer women are enrolling in the course. The Students’ Council of the University of Adelaide, by requesting the Dental Faculty to conduct a survey, has shown its awareness of the need for improving student dental health.
