Factors influencing the age of onset of menarche were studied in 400 patients attending the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital, Melbourne. Menarche is occurring at an earlier age and is also earlier in Australians than in migrants. The possible importance of the family group is indicated by a significant association between menarche and an increasing number of younger brothers, and between early menarche and the father leaving home before the child reaches the age of six years.
