The methods used for testing patients during the initial operation of a multiple screening centre are described. There were 763 patients screened during this period. For some tests, the percentage of significantly abnormal test results was as follows: vision, 65; hearing, 53; facio‐maxillary X‐ray examination, 65; chest X‐ray examinations, 19; electrocardiograms, 13; raised blood pressure (160/95 mm Hg), 15; cervical smears requiring follow‐up, 13; mammograms, 43; breast thermograms, 4; facial thermograms, 5; anaemia, 5; hyperglyæmia with glycosuria after a glucose load, 3; ocular hypertension, 0.5; and rheumatoid factor, 1. Of the first 185 referring doctors who completed a follow‐up questionnaire, 151 (81%) reported that one or more previously unknown abnormalities were discovered by the screening examination.
