The value of the lingual ascorbic acid test as an Index of ascorbic‐acid deficiency is supported by the finding of a very significant negative correlation with fasting plasma ascorbic‐acid levels. Because of technical simplicity, it is well suited for use as a screening test. Assessment of ascorbic‐acid status in groups of hospital patients, Inmates of a home for the aged, and young, healthy volunteers by the lingual ascorbic‐acid test has shown that a deficiency is more common in older people, but apparently less prevalent in Australia than in Britain.
