In a three‐year period, 46 adults with acute leukaemia were seen and 41 treated by means of “protocol” combination chemotherapy. The disease in 38 of the 41 treated patients belonged to non‐lymphoblastic types. The remission rate was 68%, with 46% complete and 22% partial remissions. The median survival time in patients failing to respond was five weeks and in those responding, 44 weeks. Twelve patients (30%) were alive at the conclusion of the study, nine of them In remission. Combined “protocol” therapy in the treatment of acute leukaemia in the adult represents a distinct advance over other forms of therapy. It is complex and rigorous and should be undertaken only in centres specially staffed and equipped for it.
