Serial colony counts on intermittent catheter specimens of urine aid in assessing the significance of the bacteria isolated. The use of dipslides reduces the work load, cost and labour that would be required for continual surveillance by conventional methods in a microbiology department. Other areas of application in screeinng urine specimens are discussed.
