Urinary tract infection tends to be a misdiagnosed condition in childhood because of the obscurity of the symptoms. When its presence has been proved, an Infection has many underlying precursors, and one of several investigational programmes may need to be initiated. This paper attempts to define the diagnostic problems, the collection of valid and meaningful urine specimens, and the investigational plans. A practical plan of management follows in Part 2.
