A comparison of the main causes of maternal death in Australia and England and Wales over the same three‐year period from 1964 to 1966 was undertaken, based on the triennial reports from the two countries. One of the aims was to discover the reason for the inferior maternal mortality rate of 0.41 per 1,000 in Australia, compared with 0.26 per 1,000 in England and Wales. In analysing the differences, full account was taken of the difficulties of comparison between the two series. The rate of maternal death from hæmorrhage and toxæmia was significantly higher In Australia than in England and Wales. In addition, other common causes of maternal death such as Infection, thromboembolism and abortion contributed to the Inferior maternal mortality rate In Australia.
