A retrospective survey of the incidence of thrombo–embolic phenomena in the puerperium was carried out at four major obstetric units. In addition, one hospital supplied figures relating to patients who had gynæcological operations and another hospital supplied figures for patients who had surgical procedures. The results showed marked variation, which was also a feature of the results of similar surveys carried out abroad. Diagnosis by the use of radioactive fibrinogen and phlebography indicated an incidence six to 10 times higher than that obtained by clinical diagnosis. Because of this, a prospective survey was abandoned until more accurate methods of diagnosis are generally available.
