The Teflon Silastic cannula Introduced by Quinton et alii (1960) is vital for the management of patients with chronic renal failure by intermittent hæmodialysis, and radiographic techniques have been in common use in the diagnosis of shunt malfunction. In the management of patients undergoing home dialysis at the Austin Hospital, radiology has been used before operation in planning cannula placement and in the operative assessment of technical adequacy at the time of insertion of the shunt, as well as for postoperative assessment. It is thought that operative radiology has reduced the incidence of early shunt malfunction. Early diagnosis of shunt malfunction has virtually eliminated declotting procedures and emergency cannula revision.
