Gram‐negative portal and systemic bacteremia is common in patients submitted to operations on the colon and rectum. While contamination of the operative field with enteric pathogens during such surgery plays the major role in the causation of postoperative wound infections, Gram‐negative bacteræmia is also a factor in their aetiology.
