Cyanosis in the neonate may be an indication of serious disease. Rapid assessment is essential to decide whether transfer of the baby to a specialized unit is necessary. Transfer of babies with suspected cyanotic congenital heart disease or other structural problems such as diaphragmatic hernia should not be delayed lest the opportunity of performing palliative or curative surgery be either completely lost or the risk of such procedures becomes unnecessarily high. General measures, Including oxygenation, temperature control, feedings, etc., must be carried out with obsessive attention to detail. Most babies presenting with cyanosis are amenable to treatment and are potentially salvageable.
