Oxygen delivery to tissues is largely regulated through erythrocytic organic phosphates. These compounds affect the oxygen dissociation curve. In a number of clinical conditions described, predictable changes in both the shape and the position of the oxygen dissociation curve are relevant when assessing, or planning treatment of, anaemia.
