During a period of three and a half years (January, 1967, till July, 1970), 350 gastroscopies were performed on 300 patients with various abdominal complaints. Of these, 221 or 74% were found to have some gastric abnormality. The commonest disorders seen were benign gastric ulcers, acute gastric lesions and gastric carcinoma, accounting for 87% of the gastric diseases. Acute upper gastro‐intestinal bleeding was the presenting symptom in 85 patients, and early gastroscopy revealed that in more than 80% some cause for the bleeding could be detected. Another group of acute gastric disorder associated with recent drug intake, when examined, showed gastric abnormalities in 85%. Amongst the more chronic conditions (chronic benign and malignant gastric ulcers), correct evaluation of the nature of the ulcer was achieved in 93% of the cases. Finally, a group of patients with suspected gastric diseases were assessed by both radiography and gastroscopy, and it was found that combined Investigations showed a high diagnostic yield.
