Since the establishment of a separate children's casualty department In the Queen Victoria Memorial Hospital, Melbourne, in 1968, the number of attendances has rapidly increased, particularly after hours. An analysis of the morbidity and demographic patterns of some 8,000 attendances over a nine‐month period is presented, and problems of language difficulty, the benefits of an Interpreter service, and the establishment of similar units in other general hospitals and primary care centres are discussed.
