A retrospective survey was undertaken from three hospitals of 119 cases of breast carcinoma in women aged between 35 and 45 years, who presented to the hospitals over a 10–year period. It was found that the relative incidence of carcinoma of the breast in this age group does not differ greatly from that in other centres. The site, type and extent of carcinoma at presentation did not differ significantly from that in women or other age groups. The symptom of pain at the site of the tumour proved to be surprisingly common (17%) and the duration of symptoms before treatment was also longer than expected with a mean figure of 12 months. The behaviour of the tumour and the prognosis of the patient did not differ in this group of patients from those in patients of other age groups.
