Periteneoscopy has been performed since 1901, but it is only with the development of more sophisticated equipment incorporating the fibreoptic light source and illumination that the procedure has became popular. Experiences with the first 50 peritenescopies performed at the Royal North Share Hospital of Sydney are reported. This procedure has been found most useful in determining the nature of liver disease and in confirming the inaperability of intraabdominal malignant conditions. It has also been used to elucidate the nature of pelvic disease. In 25 of the 50 cases, we believe that laparetemy was avoided because peritoneoscopy previded the final diagnosis, and treatment was undertaken as a result of this.
