VERY few gifted scientists can emerge from their laboratories and write with true insight upon problems facing mankind. Those who can Include Dubos, Chomsky. Aslmov, Bernal. and among the molecular biologists Watson and Monod. An Australian has yet to prove himself (Burnet argues only from selective viewpoints). A Canadian. Osler. very nearly succeeded. if one adjusts for dogma and quaint Victorian beliefs. Success follows the construction of a conceptual framework which can be historical, philosophical, sociological. biological or, in the case of J. D. Watson, journalistic. Then the analysis proceeds within the chosen framework. using heuristic principles divorced from convention or preconceived ideas. What elevates the work above run-of-the-mill status is deep understanding, either intuitive or based on experience.
