The frequency and extent of fœtal‐maternal transfer were investigated during the Puerperium in three groups of patients: patients in whom labour was terminated by cæsarean section, those who had an elective cæsarean section, and those in whom labour was completed by vaginal delivery. There was an increase (15% to 20%) in the incidence of transfer and also in its magnitude when delivery was by cæsarean section; however, transfer was not enhanced by manual removal of the placenta in these patients. Expectedly, there were higher levels and persistence of fœtal erythrocytes in patients with compatible ABO matching. In three such cases, a further increase in fœtal erythrocyte level occurred during the Puerperium. A slow transperitoneal absorption is the most likely explanation for this finding.
