The association between lichen planus and carbohydrate intolerance was investigated in 33 consecutive patients with oral lesions of lichen planus. The results of glucose tolerance tests showed that 28 of the patients had defective carbohydrate metabolism, and most had mild, maturity‐onset diabetes. These findings suggest that lichen planus is associated with impaired carbohydrate metabolism. Certain similarities between lichen planus and necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum are discussed.
