In the face of rising work‐loads, it was decided to use a screening procedure and to perform differential leucocyte counts and blood‐film examination only in selected cases. The introduction of this procedure greatly accelerated reporting and increased laboratory efficiency. A blood film was examined and a differential leucocyte count was undertaken in the investigation of 1,000 consecutive patients regarded as normal on the results of the screening procedure, to determine what abnormalities had escaped detection. The results indicate that, on the whole, only minor abnormalities were missed, and it is concluded that the benefits of the screening technique outweigh any disadvantages.
