An analysis is made of three years’ experience of operating a five‐bed intensive care unit in a peripheral hospital. The advantage of such a unit is the location of equipment and specially trained staff in one area, although problems have arisen from shortage of nurses and resident medical staff. A considerable degree of personal involvement by the consultants concerned has been needed, compared with that required in larger units, and a high level of nursing training has been essential.
