Hetacillin Is a 6‐aminopenicillanic acid, prepared by acetylation during the synthesis of ampicillin. Like that drug, it is quite non‐toxic and effective against Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative infections. Because it is very acid‐stable and has appreciable resistance to penicillinase, it was thought that it might have a role in bacterial gastro‐enteritis. Accordingly, a double‐blind trial of hetacillin compared with a placebo In the treatment of gastro‐enteritis was undertaken. It could not be shown to have a beneficial effect in the treatment of gastro‐enteritis.
