Two cases of rupture of the cervical trachea by blunt external trauma are presented. Gross subcutaneous emphysema, particularly over the neck, without evidence of a bronchial or pulmonary injury directs attention to this condition. Immediate bronchoscopy to confirm the diagnosis and help maintain the airway, followed by repair of the trachea with establishment of a tracheostomy, is the recommended method of management.
