Persistent bleeding after prostatic surgery may be due to local vascular mechanisms or to disorders of hæmostasis. Four cases (examples of primary fibrinolysis, thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulation and a circulating anticoagulant) are cited to illustrate the nature of such problems and the appropriate steps necessary to diagnose the defects in the hæmostatic process. The diagnosis and treatment of the common causes of abnormal post‐prostatectomy bleeding are discussed. A plan of management which allows appropriate therapy and early detection of less common causes of abnormal bleeding is suggested.
