A survey of carcinoma of the uterine cervix is presented covering the years 1956 to 1966, in the stable, fully developed island community of Tasmania. A coordinated detection programme using the Papanicolaou smear technique has been fostered by the Tasmanian Cancer Committee since 1954. Voluntary, broad‐based education of the public on the curability of cancer began in 1958, although some such education had been conducted intermittently since 1938. The latest education programme was specifically directed at altering public attitudes toward cancer of the skin, breast, and the uterine cervix. The aim was to encourage the public to attend clinics voluntarily as the result of acquired knowledge of the subject. Facilities were increased as public demand rose. Comprehensive modern radiation and surgical techniques were available for treatment on a coordinated basis. The survey covers the changing incidence of the stages of carcinoma of the uterine cervix at the time of presentation for treatment and records the increasing detection of carcinoma‐in‐situ.
