Spontaneous ascent of infection from bladder to kidney in pregnancy was documented using a simple bladder washout test. Dilatation of the upper urinary tract was not of importance in predisposing to ascent of infection. Symptoms may indicate that ascent has occurred, but serum antibody response is generally unhelpful.
