Diazoxide, a non‐diuretic benzothiadiazine derivative, was administered intravenously to 14 patients with an acute hypertensive emergency accompanying severe preeclampsia or eclampsia. In all cases there was a prompt reduction of blood pressure to near‐normal levels, the effect lasting several hours. No serious untoward effects affecting mother or baby were observed.
