Over the last 30 years the use of the operating microscope has changed the pattern of ear, nose and throat surgery, not only in relation to the ear, but also In other regions of the specialty. A description of these advances is presented in the hope that surgeons of other specialties may be encouraged to see the benefits which can be gained from having a well‐lighted magnified surgical field.
