The clinical features and thyroid function tests in a group of elderly thyrotoxic patients were compared with those of a younger thyrotoxic population. As a result of this study it would appear that the classical clinical features, although not dissimilar in both groups, occur less frequently in an older population, and that single thyroid function tests especially in the older age group often give normal results. It is recommended that, especially in the older age group, any clinical features consistent with the diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis should lead to the performance of at least three thyroid function studies on that particular patient so that the correct diagnosis may be reached.
