Data are presented on the incidence of signs and symptoms often used in the diagnosis of thyroid metabolic status or in the detection of specific thyroid disorders. Correlation between some pairs of symptoms has been studied. Numerical information is collated for the following tests that are valuable in distinguishing thyroid disorders: the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, the leucocyte count, the pattern of low radioiodine uptake and normal or raised thyroxine level, the thyroid scan, the binding capacity of serum thyroxine‐binding globulin, and the tanned red‐cell test for thyroid autoantibodies.
