The availability of patients for teaching purposes in Western Australia has been determined from an analysis of discharge summaries relating to 15 selected medical and surgical conditions over a three month period. In the teaching hospitals no problems appear to exist in the medical wards, but the numbers of surgical patients and their age distribution reveal a different pattern to that of non‐teaching hospitals. There is a paucity of common surgical conditions and a predominance of the elderly in the teaching hospitals. This situation represents a serious problem in the training of future doctors and indicates a need for immediate remedial action.
