Rifampicin is a new broad‐spectrum antibiotic, active against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and some atypical mycobacteria. An Australian clinical trial of rifampicin was undertaken in June, 1969, and an evaluation of side effects and toxicity and of the effect of rifampicin on hepatic function has already been presented. 4 This paper discusses the protocol of the trial and presents an evaluation of the therapeutic efficacy of rifampicin based on bacteriological conversion.
