The use of ethchlorvynol as a sedative was investigated in patients with impaired renal function. Contrary to expectation, the blood levels of ethchlorvynol did not fall as rapidly as in normal subjects and accumulation of the drug caused drowsiness when it was used on a regular nightly basis. Although only a small proportion (about 10%) of the administered dose appears in the urine of normal subjects, it seems that the kidney plays an essential role in the metabolism or excretion of the drug, which is therefore unsuitable for use in patients with renal insufficiency.
