Five hundred and forty‐nine patients were studied during their stay in hospital after delivery, and 7·5% were found to have infections. Postpartum anaemia, intravaginal manipulations during labour and delivery, and cæsarean section delivery were found to be associated with high infection rates. Study of the bacteria isolated showed that, as first‐line treatment, ampicillin is probably the best choice in the puerperium.
