Chronic illness in childhood must be evaluated in the context of the child's level of emotional development, the state of his relationship with other members of his family (especially his mother), and the family's own dynamic organization. Juvenile diabetes is examined as a paradigm of this situation. Implications for management are discussed, with special emphasis on the importance for both mother and child of a continuing and sensitive relationship with one member of the treatment team.
