In a review of 48 cases of histologically proven naso‐pharyngeal carcinoma, in six basal sclerosis in the X‐ray films of the skull was the sole or predominant feature. Increased density in the anterior arch of the atlas and odontoid process was present in four of the six cases. To date, the literature reveals only two similar cases. Clinically, in all six cases either extensive cranial nerve involvement or distant metastases were present. It is suggested that when extensive basal sclerosis is radiographically visible, the prognosis is grave.
