An account is given of the life and background of Jonathan Martin, who set fire to York Minster in 1829 and caused considerable damage to this famous edifice. He is identified as a paranoid schizophrenic, one of four brothers, who all, in their own way, showed eccentricities, one of them being a famed painter and engraver. A connection with the development of the M'Naughten Rules is postulated.
