Since 1967, the Melbourne Medical Postgraduate Committee has conducted a computer matching service for the appointment of junior resident medical officers. The graduates, with the aid of the “Directory of Internships and Residencies Available in Victorian Hospitals”, make a confidential selection of hospitals in order of preference. The hospitals similarly make a confidential list of the applicants in order of preference. The computer then simply matches the graduate's choice of hospital with the hospital's choice of graduate, making it possible to appoint all graduates applying to these hospitals in one operation. All Victorian hospitals now participate, and in addition, two hospitals in New South Wales and two in Tasmania participate in the scheme.
