The concept of dementia is defined, with particular reference to premorbid personality, environmental factors and reversibility. In the differential diagnosis, pseudo‐dementias and non‐demanding organic disorders are first excluded. The dementias proper are classified under the headings of irreversible and reversible conditions; vignettes of disease processes are drawn. A brief investigatory scheme is suggested, and the need for a thorough search of the course of the dementia stressed.
