An increase in the incidence of thyrotoxicosis in Tasmania after iodation of bread has been reported. The change was apparent from the middle of 1966. A return to pre‐iodation levels after two to three years was predicted. This has not occurred, and the increased incidence may continue. Low iodine concentration in drinking water confirms that iodine deficiency is present in the natural state. Fortuitous sources of iodine have been discovered, and one of these is described. The significance of these findings is discussed.
