Experience has shown that the degree of benefit of the MEDLARS bibliography varies with the precision with which the researcher can define his request, with whether the topic is completely covered by the journals indexed by MEDLARS, with the number of foreign languages the researcher is prepared to use, and with the suitability of the index terms. MEDLARS is a great advance in the technique of gathering information for biomedical research, and has great potential in Australia.
