The mean serum urate level of 500 employed Australian adult males was 6·28 mg/100 ml, with a standard deviation of 1·23 mg/100 ml. The distribution was unimodal, and emphasized that the population cannot be separated into two groups, one normal and one hyperuricæmic. There was a positive correlation of the serum urate level with weight, alcohol intake, blood pressure and occupation, but not with height or hæmoglobin value. The association between blood pressure and occupation on the one hand and serum urate level on the other was indirect, and dependent upon a relationship with weight. The therapeutic approach to asymptomatic hyperuricæmia is discussed. The prevalence of gout was 1·4%.
