Twenty‐nine patients submitted to operations on the gastro‐intestinal and biliary tracts were investigated with systemic venous blood cultures on the day of operation. Pathogenic bacteria, 80% of which were Gram‐negative enteric bacilli, were isolated from the systemic blood of nine patients. This bacteræmia was not associated with clinical evidence of sepsis, but may have contributed to the pathogenesis of wound infections complicating the operations on the large intestine.
