Over a period of 12 months, 172 patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction were admitted to a peripheral city hospital without a coronary care unit. There were 131 survivors and 39 deaths, and a further two patients were transferred to central hospitals for treatment. Thus, the overall failure rate was 23·8%. Survival after cardiac arrest resulted in 21·4% of cases. These figures are better than most when patients are treated in general wards. This is probably a side effect of research carried out In coronary care units. However, some difficulties with treatment arose. It is considered that these will best be overcome when a coronary care unit is established.
