Local changes in the skin and subcutaneous tissue are known to occur as a result of percutaneous absorption of corticosteroids. Systemic absorption of significant amounts of topically applied corticosteroid has been documented for many sites of application, Including the eye, nose, mouth, lungs and skin. Knowledge concerning these aspects is reviewed, with particular reference to percutaneous absorption in infancy and childhood. Reports are considered concerning the amount of corticosteroid absorbed, and the rapidity of absorption, as indicated by the application of labelled corticosteroid to normal and diseased skin in adults and infants. Some factors influencing the efficacy of different compounds and the amount of percutaneous absorption are discussed.
