Today much has been written regarding both opinion and research results as to the personality of the drug abuser and the drug‐dependent individual. Such an approach is proper and valuable. However, it must be remembered that an individual lives and functions in a society and in a particular culture, subculture or contraculture (Wolfgang and Ferracuti, 1967). From this it follows that we should be concerned with drug taking from at least three points of view: the sociological aspect; the biological (individual) aspect; and the psychosocial aspect, where the individual interacts with his environment. This paper is largely concerned with this third facet of the problem.
