This paper is based upon deliberations and practical studies undertaken since July, 1969. It consists of a marriage of theoretical concepts and principles, their evaluation and assessment in practice, and pilot studies undertaken at Southern Memorial Hospital. It is our submission that we have formulated a plan for a Family Medical Service at Southern Memorial Hospital that has delineated the basic concepts of family medicine and established the basic structure and organization for implementation of such a service. Furthermore, it is suggested that this will provide, for the first time in the community, a blueprint for the practice of community and comprehensive medical care.
