A survey was undertaken of the 1966 Queensland medical graduates in relation to their postgraduate experience in obstetrics and attitudes to their training in this field. A reply was received from 96 of the 111 graduates who received the questionnaire (86%). There was a widespread involvement of these doctors in obstetric care in the course of either general or country hospital practice. Although most doctors expressed satisfaction with their undergraduate education in obstetrics and gynæcology, many believed that the postgraduate phase of their training had not equipped them adequately for their present role. The results suggest that the current trend toward curtailment of the undergraduate obstetric education should proceed only in relation to expanded and reorganized postgraduate education if the needs of the community are to be safeguarded.
